Chapter Fifteen

Rachel stared up at Sophie trustingly then clamping her thumb back in her mouth right up to the knuckle she leaned back in her pushchair. The streets of Blackpool were still alive with holidaymakers and Sophie was glad of the crowds as she hurried along as best she could. It was no easy task, burdened as she was not to mention her aching stomach and her tender breasts.

Every now and then she glanced nervously back across her shoulder but thankfully no one seemed to be following her. Having lived in Blackpool ad of her life she knew the labyrinth of streets like the back of her hand. Tonight she was grateful for the fact, which meant that she also knew ad the short cuts to take. After a while she steeled herself and turned onto the street that ran along the seafront. Despite the heat of the day the wind was now howling across the pavements and she could hear the sea pounding on the beach. Every now and again spray would hurtle over the sea defences and in no time at ad her long dark hair was whipping about her heart-shaped face in damp wispy curls.

She paused just once to glance at the myriad coloured lights overhead that were strung for as far as she could see and to tuck the blanket more tightly about Rachel's sturdy little body, grateful to see that the child was slipping into a doze.

As if the wind and salt spray wasn't enough to soak her through a drizzle began to fall and she cursed beneath her breath. Rachel should be tucked up all warm and cosy in bed now, instead of which she was about to embark on a journey that had no guarantee of a home at the end of it.

Casting a last glance at the sea, Sophie again turned off into one of the side streets and headed towards the train station. She had almost reached her destination when she paused. Wouldn't the train station be the first place Ben would go when he discovered that she'd fled?

As she considered, she decided that it probably would be. Making a hasty decision she now changed direction and headed for the bus station instead. If she were to change buses two or three times it would mean there was less chance of her being found. She was quite aware that she was probably being paranoid but she wasn't prepared to take any unnecessary chances.

At last she reached the ticket office and fumbled in her purse as the man inside raised his eyebrows.

'Where you heading then, love?' he asked, as he glanced at Sophie curiously.

She felt colour flame in her cheeks. Hadn't he ever seen a woman with a child before?

'I want to get to Nuneaton in Warwickshire,' she told him shortly.

'Right . . . let me see now. Ah, you'll need the one going through to Coventry then. Once you arrive you can get one from there into Nuneaton. Taking the last of the holidaymakers home it is.
